The University of Calabria (Unical) was founded in 1972 and is located in the Campus of Arcavacata di Rende (CS), designed by the architect Vittorio Gregotti. With a student population of approximately 24,000, Unical is considered a large-sized university at the national level.

With its 14 departments, 13 interdepartmental centers, 5 Joint Service Centers, the largest library structure in the southern Italy, and over 1,180 professors and researchers, Unical offers 80 different study programs (31 Bachelor's degrees, 43 Master's degrees, and 6 Single-cycle Master's degrees).

Unical participates in START through multiple departments, including the Department of Biology, Ecology, and Earth Sciences (DIBEST) and the Department of Computer Engineering, Modeling, Electronics, and Systems (DIMES).

UNICAL's Expertise

The research groups involved in the START project have a wealth of experience in different fields, such as mineralogy, petrography, geochemistry, non-destructive diagnostics, data processing and development of predictive models with circuit, statistical and artificial intelligence approaches.

By combining different competences, UNICAL can conduct extensive characterisation of both raw materials and the finished materials, while defining machine learning and feature extraction algorithms to assess the quality of manufactured products.

Furthermore, starting from raw materials and using the results of laboratory test analyses, it has the capabilities to define an AI-based predictive model for the predetermination of ceramic product properties.
