The University of Calabria (Unical) was founded in 1972 and is located in the Campus of Arcavacata di Rende (CS), designed by the architect Vittorio Gregotti. With a student population of approximately 24,000, Unical is considered a large-sized university at the national level.

With its 14 departments, 13 interdepartmental centers, 5 Joint Service Centers, the largest library structure in the southern Italy, and over 1,180 professors and researchers, Unical offers 80 different study programs (31 Bachelor's degrees, 43 Master's degrees, and 6 Single-cycle Master's degrees).

Unical participates in START through multiple departments, including the Department of Biology, Ecology, and Earth Sciences (DIBEST) and the Department of Computer Engineering, Modeling, Electronics, and Systems (DIMES).
