The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Unibz) is a public, non-state institution founded in 1997 and promoted by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano as a university with a strong international and multilingual vocation (German, Italian, English, and Ladin).

The University is organized into three campuses (Bolzano, Brixen, and Bruneck) and five faculties. Unibz's educational offerings and research areas, focused on interdisciplinarity and sustainability, reflect a deep connection to the territory and a strong international outlook.

Unibz will participate in the research activities of START with internal staff from the research macro area of Industrial Engineering and Automation (IEA) within the Faculty of Engineering.

UNIBZ' Expertise

The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano features the Smart Mini Factory Lab a learning factory lab for applied research and teaching. The team investigates and simulates production technology concepts and methods in the context of Industry 4.0, considering both requirements of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as challenges found in large companies. Core focuses are hybrid and human-centred production and assembly systems, as well as robotics and mechatronics for industrial automation. The Digital Twin paradigm gains tangible importance when those research areas blend the one with the others, leading researchers and professors towards new objectives.

The Smart Mini Factory Lab offers a platform where researchers, students and companies’ employees can meet to enable and boost the transfer of knowledge from research to companies, e.g. through research collaborations or contract research. The team offers practical seminars for companies on the topic of Industry 4.0.
